Mandate of Hell: The fall of Hong Kong
The Mandate of Heaven was a political and theological organization method employed by the since-long-gone Chinese Empire to back up their emperor's claim to the throne. In western civilization, this argument went by the name of "Divine right", and its's abuses lead to the downfall of absolutism in Europe and its' colonies. The biggest difference between both concepts relies mostly upon the fact that the "Mandate" seemed to be a tangible possession, rather than an abstract invisible concept, and that it could be taken away from the ruler if his reign didn't prove to be prosperous enough, an attribution that the Chinese nobles had little chance to put to practice. Nowadays, China is a so-called "communist" state, and whether or not its' political and economic policies offer the perseverance of the main basis of Marxism, it is certain that the "emperor" in charge, Xi Jinping, is more than anxious to expand the influence of the Asian Giant in the region, starting with the newest and most prosperous addition to his mandate, Hong Kong.
After the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the small city-state has remained so far with a certain grade of internal independence, a deal sealed with the famous agreement between Britain and the People's Republic of China. In recent weeks, however, we have witnessed how generations of Hongkongers that have grown under the wing of freedom of speech, freedom of association and basic democratic rights, have had to fight their way out of protests that seem to have little to no effect on the decision of its' authorities and ultimately, on the Chinese bureaucratic class. About a week ago, the National People's Congress passed the National Security Bill, a resolution that bans in the whole of the Hong Kong region the mocking of the Chinese flag, anthem, and censors a wide variety of liberties that have been instructed to the young Hongkongers ever since their kindergarten years. It is precisely this generation the one that is afraid of losing those guarantees that have been a vital part of their development from an early age.
China used the perfect moment to strike. As the world witnessed the horrific effects of the coronavirus pandemic and adjusted to the "new" normal state of society, China, like a crouching tiger, grasped the small Hongkongnese crane's neck, and now chokes her harder and harder, forcing her to join his mandate; that I would rather call a reign of terror. Only democracy can allow the full development of Mankind in all its' splendor. I think it's safe to say that this New Mandate of Heaven does not resemble it's predecessor, since there is an absolute certainty that the emperor will never lose its' grace, in view of this, I believe a more proper name would be The Mandate of Hell.
